"Positing 1960 (or 1957 in the present instance) as the starting point, and limiting our attention to so-called avant-garde practice, the archive of Art Metropole can be seen as a descriptive field of contemporary artistic and cultural concerns. Alongside documents of the legitimized movements of the fifties and sixties - Fluxus, Pop Art, Minimal Art, Arte Povera - we find evidence of those vanguard precursors - Dada, Surrealism and Futurist art - which together inform the bulk of the archive's content: the fragments, known collectively as Conceptual art, and the manifestations which continue to give life to many of the principles activated by that network of ideas." EARTHWORKS. Dwan, New York, NY. October 5, 1968. Announcement card. Color. Sand on cardboard. Excellent minus condition. Slight wear at 2 corners. 9 x 12". "VIRGINIA DWAN: In the late spring of '68, when we still hadn't found land in New Jersey to put these earthworks on, because that's what we were looking for, we decided that there was so much energy behind the whole concept -- there was so much of a need to get this, to move this out into the world, that we wanted to find some vehicle, and the only thing that seemed available was the gallery space, which was very definitely our last choice. To me, the "Earthworks" show was one of the most important things of my art career. Of course, not just because of the show itself, but because it heralded a whole interest that became more and more consuming, to me. To me, earthwork and minimal art were kind of the high points of my gallery." Reference: pp. 40-41 (Tape 7), pp. 13-14 (Tape 8) VIRGINIA DWAN. Interview by Charles F. Stuckey. SWEDISH STATE ART. Galerie S:t Petri Archive of Experimental and Marginal Art, Lund, Sweden. January 5 - 20, 1980. Exhibition poster. Black and white. Offset lithograph printed. Folded. Text: Ludwig Wittgenstein and David E. Weston. Very good condition. Unfolded: 16.5 x 11.75". "It may well be the case that the state of the arts reflects in some measure the arts of the state; and it is certainly the case, for one reason or another, that the interest of the modern state in the arts has been increasing, if only as a result of being a rather disinterested patron of the last resort. In other situations, however, this interest may fairly be described as 'total'. The kind of art actually produced by the modern state, rather than its control of the arts as such, together with the processes of its creation, has received far less attention. With this exhibition of Swedish State Art - i.e. art produced more or less directly by the state for the purpose of persuading its citizens to behave in one way rather than another - Galerie S:t Petri remedies this situation by placing it in a context of public debate from which it emerges." Text: Marie Sjoberg. Very good condition. Unfolded: 16.5 x 11.75". "Since 1971 the experimental, non-commercial art laboratory Galerie S:t Petri in Lund, Sweden, has been carrying out research and presenting projects in the fields of contemporary art and philosophy. Many different facets of thought and expression have been explored extensively and in depth during the gallery's nine years of existence. In accordance with his interest in experimental developments quite outside the commercial circuits of the art world of today, Jean Sellem of S:t Petri considered it as being of great interest and importance to explore, as the present sphere of art but also in areas such as music, poetry and science. The idea was announced in the local press that anyone regarding her/himself as premonitory of what is to come in the near future in her or his respective field of concern was free to use the five exhibition rooms of S:t Petri to express this. The motto of the manifestation was: Unlimited Expression. Not even a time schedule was given, particularly since the process of a wholeness being gradually built up was also to be considered in the experiment." Reference: UNLIMITED EXPRESSION.
