BEUYS, JOSEPH
Untitled.
Pour ecrire la liberte, Brussels, Belgium.   1975.

Bag is red, green and black on white plastic. Folded. Very good condition. Some rubbing. 17.5 x 11". First print is black and white with photodocumentation of the action / performance 'I Like America and America Like Me'. Offset lithograph printed on both sides. Folded. Very good minus condition. Light creasing throughout. Unfolded: 14 x 21.75". Second print is a black and white reproduction of a photograph of Beuys on stage with a horse. Very good minus condition. Light creasing throughout. 11 x 14". Third print is titled Stuck 17 [Play 17]. Black on yellow paper. Good condition. Creasing at top edge. 11.75 x 8.75".
"Play 17 is one of several short plays Beuys wrote in the early 1960s. As seen here, most consist of a list of characters with a few lines of instruction. The first line shows that the play is set 'In a room with 4 fat corners acting together'. This is followed by a list of animals and insects and concludes with the stage directions; 'The animals vanish as soon as the Western man enters. Simultaneously projected on the room's north wall the 'Eastern man''. This reflects the artist's belief that Western culture had separated itself from nature, unlike Eastern culture. The play's importance to Beuys is shown by the fact it exists in several handwritten versions and four multiple editions. It was written as a scenario for an 'action'."

"Broken Music shows works of visual artists created with and for the medium of the record: records, record-covers, record-objects, record-installations. In contrast to the composer or musician who perceives the record first and foremost as a vehicle transporting his musical ideas, the visual artist is especially interested in the optical as well as the acoustical presence. In the early 60's, Milan Knizak called his record-collages 'Broken Music' - by destroying, painting, pasting and breaking records - he also broke with the traditional habits of hearing. 'Broken Music' stands for a break with conventional ideas, as a breakthrough into something new. This start - somewhat simple to be sure, but thereby all the more conclusive - seemed convincing enough to form the concept for the whole exhibition."

EX GUIDE. WE INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM. Print Ads and TV Spots by Artists.
Mercer Union, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.   November 6 - December 12, 2009.
Exhibition catalog. Black and white. Wrappers. Staple bound. Curated by Sarah Robayo Sheridan with Steven Leiber and Ted Purves. Essays by T. Purves and S.R. Sheridan accompany reproductions of artworks placed in magazine ad spaces and stills from TV spots by artists. Excellent condition. 7.5 x 5". 31 pages.
"The artworks grouped under the general moniker "interruptions by artists" originally circulated by alternative distribution, appearing through the platform of a magazine ad space or TV spot rather than through the formal avenues of gallery or museum display. Many of the works in the selection evidence a conceptual tendency, preferring to disseminate ideas over objects, gestures over lasting monuments. Each performs a disruptive function, either by occupying an antagonistic stance towards the surrounding media environment or by embracing the poetics of direct democracy for the millions."
