"The function of the little magazine will remain fundamentally the same even though that cloud of dust thrown up by the stampede of carpet-baggers during the last decade has obscured this function. It is to grasp the significance of certain shifts away from the commonplace at a given period. It is to remain firmly not a part of any broad based movement but to pluck from such movements figures who, perhaps themselves, out of context, miss the relevance of their own achievement. And it is to be supremely arrogant.'" Reference: METAPHOR AND MOTIF. Tarasque Press Exhibition 1972. FINLAY, IAN HAMILTON / ROSENTHAL, HERBERT
La Belle Hollandaise. [Ian Hamilton Finlay with Herbert Rosenthal].
[Wild Hawthorn Press, Lanark, Scotland].   [1967].
Poem / print. Pink and black silkscreen printed on white heavy paper. Very good gondition. 22.25 x 17".
"La Belle Hollandaise is a title of a Picasso portrait of a Dutch girl, and 'x-patch' gives: 'crosspoatch' (as we say of a little girl or boy who is in a bad mood), plus windmill (x), plus the patched costume of the Dutch (as is traditionally represented), plus the idea of 'patch', perhaps tulip-patch, by the windmill, therefore suggesting a canal-scene too"

FINLAY, IAN HAMILTON / SANDERMAN, MARGOT / HUNTLY, GORDON
Rhymes for Lemons.
Wild Hawthorn Press, [Stonypath, Dunsyre, Lanark, Scotland, UK].   1970.
Artists' book. Green, blue and white. Accordion folded. Tape bound. Drawings by M. Sanderman. Writing by G. Huntly. Numbered 48 of an edition of 300 copies. Signed. Very good condition. Folded: 4.75 x 8.25". Unpaginated.
"It is not only the shape of the boats which 'rhyme' in Rhymes for Lemons. On each of the pages, as they unfold, one also comes across the names of fishing vessels: Dulsie, Blenda, Nimrod, Yellowfin, Parry, etc. It is impossible to avoid the suggestion that this series of names also provides 'rhymes' which are, in a wide sense, metaphorical. They turn the boats into notional characters, male and female, some with names which are common enough, others with more unsual-sounding ones. These have a ring of suggested fable (Nimrod, Argo, Mizpah), pastoral (Amaryllis) or allegory (Ira). The series evokes classical poetic modes not unassociated with the region where the lemon tree grows. The suggestion is that the actual fishing-boats bearing these names fancifully re-enact such poems, in northern waters and in modern times."
