"What made the project of California Assemblage particularly interesting and appropriate for our university museum was that, although there had been a number of exhibitions presenting historical surveys of this art form in California, none attempted to present, through an interpretative exhibition, a clear theoretical position on what has defined the art of assemblage in California specifically, and how the development of this art has influenced contemporary forms." September 3 - November 21, 1976 / National Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. May 20 - September 11, 1977. "'Painting and Sculpture in California: The Modern Era' should be viewed as a beginning rather than an ending for in truth it is just that. This exhibition represents the first completely serious effort to document in a manageable, historical fashion, the vast multiplicity of creative effort which has taken place in the state of California over the past seventy years. The exhibition takes on the physical proportions of a festival by offering over three hundred works by nearly two hundred artists and still remains highly selective." "Tom Marioni is the key figure in the Northern California conceptual art movement and is internationally known. In 1970 Marioni founded the Museum of Conceptual Art (MOCA) in San Francisco, and although the Museum no longer exists, it has had a worldwide influence. The exhibit at the Museo entitled The Italians, The Germans, The Japanese represents three tableaux, three cultures; each evoking the characteristics of each culture by using certain visual cues, such as symbolic objects and symbols and by recreating an 'atmosphere.'" MARIONI, TOM ACTION by TOM MARIONI "STUDIO". University Art Museum, Berkeley, CA. November 5, 1980.
Performance poster. Black printed on yellow paper. Folded. Very good condition. Unfolded: 15.75 x 21.5". "Marioni's action for MARTIX 39, Studio, is a public activity designed to suggest the private space of the artist's studio. . . In Studio Marioni draws his life-sized shadow which is distorted by a piece of black velvet suspended between two yellow spotlights and the vertical drawing surface. In a recent conversation Marioni explained that he chose yellow light becuase it is linked with the intellect in alchemical theory and would, therefore, facilitate the telepathic communication he hopes to achieve with the audience. Musical sound, alternating between jazz and classical accompainies the action much as it would in his own studio." Reference: MATRIX. BERKELEY. 1978 - 1998.
