GROH, KLAUS
Untitled.
  1978 / 1980.
Drawings. Color and black and white. Four drawings in an envelope. Wrappers. Matted. Photocopy with hand coloring and stickers. Each drawing is signed and dated on the mat recto. Each drawing is numbered in series and rubber stamped on the mat verso. Excellent condition. 11 x 9.5" each.
"Klaus Groh has been active both as a Mail Art, photomontage and performance artist, as well as a teacher, art critic and, not least, as an art theorist. Collage has been one of Klaus Groh's most important forms of artistic expression during more than 15 years. For many years he has also run his own gallery in his house and garden.
In collage there is an "exploded" and open structure, and in that way people come closer to the "primary" experience. The fragmentized material of the collage can be one way of reaching back to the actual "primary" stuff of experience, and consequently collage is also a method for increasing individual liberty. Groh tears up advertisments in small pieces, Playboy pinups, landscapes, faces, buildings, trees, and puts the fragments back together into new, unexpected and very imaginative combinations.
"One of the most important functions Mail Art had previously," Klaus Groh says, "was to bridge over the isolation the artists in the socialist countries behind the Iron Curtain and in the dictatorships of South America lived in. With no inspection authorities involved, the artists more often than not could send their work wherever they liked, and they were accepted everywhere by the international art world, and sometimes honoured with prizes. Now, with the demolition of the Wall and the fall of the dictatorships, I believe that Mail Art will gain a partially new content; probably the aspect of quality will become more important. That is to say, good technique, clear expression and innovative messages.""
